Faculty of Literature’s development milestones
Following the national reunification in 1975, the Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature Department was established under the merger of the Vietnamese Literature and Sino-Nom Departments of the former University of Saigon, reinforced by academic personnel from Hanoi.
On April 30, 1975, the University of Ho Chi Minh City was formed by merging the University of Science and the Faculty of Letters of Saigon. Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature Department became part of the new institution.
In 1978, the Department was elevated to the Faculty of Vietnamese Linguistics and Literature by decision of the Ministry of Higher and Professional Education, comprising three departments: Literature, Linguistics, and Sino-Nom.
In 1982, it was renamed the Faculty of Linguistics and Literature. In May 1992, the Faculty was assigned the responsibility of training in Journalism.
In August 1994, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision No. 2308/GD&ĐT, signed by Deputy Minister Vũ Ngọc Hải, on renaming it the Faculty of Linguistics, Literature and Journalism.
In 1996, the University of Ho Chi Minh City was restructured into two institutions: the University of Natural Sciences and the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, both of which are under VNUHCM. The Faculty of Linguistics, Literature, and Journalism became part of the latter.
In May 2007, the Faculty was renamed the Faculty of Literature and Linguistics (Decision No. 111/QĐ-TCHC, signed by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Võ Văn Sen, USSH President).
On February 21, 2017, the USSH President issued three decisions, namely Decision No. 177/QĐ-XHNV-TCCB, Decision No. 174/QĐ-XHNV-TCCB, and Decision No. 176/QĐ-XHNV-TCCB, officially reorganising the Faculty and renaming it the Faculty of Literature.
Initially, in 1978, the Faculty comprised three departments: Literature, Linguistics, and Sino-Nom. By 1994, in response to expanded training responsibilities and staff development, the President of the University of Ho Chi Minh City issued Decision No. 966/TCCB, dated October 20, 1994, reorganising the Faculty into seven departments: (1) Cultural Studies and Folklore, (2) Vietnamese Literature and Literary Theory, (3) Foreign Literature, (4) Linguistics, (5) Sino-Nom, (6) Chinese Linguistics and Literature, and (7) Journalism
In 1998, the Chinese Linguistics and Literature Department became a separate faculty. In May 2007, the Journalism Department also became an independent one. In the same year, the Department of Art Studies was established. In 2017, the Department of Linguistics also became independent, now functioning as the Faculty of Linguistics.
Currently, the Faculty of Literature comprises five departments: (1) Vietnamese Literature, (2) Literary Theory and Criticism, (3) Foreign Literature and Comparative Literature, (4) Sino-Nom, and (5) Art Studies.
In 2015, the Faculty established a Quality Assurance Unit and adjusted its members in 2018.
In 2016, the BAL was AUN-QA accredited.
