ABSTRACT
Essay originated from notes, but it gradually separated itself and became an independent genre. In the intermediate position between narratives and lyrics, essay has soft and flexible characteristics of the modern prose. In the essay, multiform emotional tones of the
subjective ego (self) in an artist are freely exposed, likely to that in the lyric.
The formation and development of the genre essay during the modernization of the Vietnamese and Chinese literature underwent several similarities and differences in the principles of argument and the practices of composing.
The research aim of the present paper is to investigate the appearance and characteristics of the genre essay in both Vietnamese and Chinese literature. On the basis of that, the paper aims to draw out the principles and rules of the modernizing process of prose in those countries with the Han-script culture.
TÙY BÚT - MỘT THỂ LOẠI VĂN XUÔI HIỆN ĐẠI

Tùy bút phái sinh từ ký, nhưng dần dần nó đã tách hẳn ra thành một thể loại độc lập. Nằm ở vị trí trung gian, giáp ranh giữa tự sự với trữ tình, tùy bút mang những đặc điểm nghệ thuật hết sức linh hoạt, mềm dẻo của một thể loại văn xuôi hiện đại. Trong tùy bút, những cung bậc cảm xúc muôn màu muôn vẻ của cái tôi chủ quan ở người nghệ sĩ được tự do bộc lộ, gần như trong thơ trữ tình.
Sự hình thành và phát triển của thể loại tùy bút trong tiến trình hiện đại hóa hai nền văn học: Việt Nam và Trung Quốc - có những điểm tương đồng và dị biệt với nhau, từ cơ sở lý luận cho tới thực tế sáng tác.
Khảo sát sự xuất hiện và đặc điểm của thể loại tùy bút ở cả hai nền văn học, rồi từ cơ sở đó mà rút ra những nguyên tắc, quy luật của quá trình hiện đại hóa về phương diện văn xuôi ở các nước thuộc khu vực văn hóa chữ Hán - đó chính là mục tiêu nghiên cứu cụ thể của tham luận này.
